As we headed back to our campsite, we toured 2 other locations. The name Montezuma's Well (and Castle) is actually a mistaken belief by white visitors who believed the structures in the mountains were actually built by Aztecs. The well provided a massive amount of water that the Indians used to grow crops. The water was heavily polluted with natural arsenic which apparently didn't transfer to the corn and beans they grew. However, they were smart enough to use the nearby river for drinking water, not the well. You can see houses in the cliffs above the well.
